Your New York Auto Insurance Obligations
In order to understand what your auto insurance can do, you must understand what you need to do to prove you are insured and the benefits that come with that proof.
In order to drive in New York you must have up-to-date car insurance that meets the NY required insurance coverage standards including liability insurance that covers:
- Minimum Bodily Injury Coverage: A minimum of $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident
- Minimum Property Damage Coverage: A minimum of $10,000
- Minimum Uninsured/Underinsured Bodily Injury coverage: A minimum of $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident
- Minimum Basic Personal Injury Protection coverage: A minimum of $50,000
Remember that if you are pulled over by the cops and you don't have your current car insurance ID card, you can be issued a ticket by the officer.
How You Are Covered After An Accident
As a "no fault" insurance state, New York requires that covered drivers are helped to get back on their feet and back to work as quickly as possible, no matter who was at fault for the accident.
LipsigBronx.com also states that every New York driver has to carry a minimum of $50,000 in Personal Injury Protection Insurance (PIP). This money is supposed to cover any injuries sustained by passengers in the car, as well as pedestrians and cyclists who are struck by the vehicle. It's also important to know that PIP is attached to every New Yorker's vehicle and its registration and not you personally or the state in which you were driving when the accident occurred.
