At Least 3 Construction Workers Injured In Harlem Crane Accident

Three construction workers were injured when a miniature crane toppled over at a construction site in East Harlem on Monday, June 25.

A construction crew was working to install a curtain wall at a building on East 126th Street near Lexington Avenue at around 11:10 a.m. when the mini-crane lost control. The crane was carrying a panel when it rolled over and toppled down three or four stories to the ground below. One worker was brought down with the crane, and two others were also injured in the accident.

According to another working from a neighboring worksite, the panel landed on one of the worker’s legs.

The three injured construction workers were brought to Harlem Hospital. The worker who fell three stories with the crane was taken in critical condition and was later upgraded to stable condition. Another worker was listed in serious condition with non-life-threatening injuries. The third worker suffered minor injuries after being struck by debris.

The Department of Buildings is currently investigating this accident. Your Legal Options After A Construction Accident

When a devastating construction like this occurs, the victims often wonder what their legal options may be. A serious construction accident can result in permanent injuries and potentially interfere with your ability to make a living. When these accidents happen due to negligence, it’s important for the victims to recover the financial compensation they deserve from the negligent parties.

Construction accident lawsuits are especially complex, as you may or may not have the option to file one depending on the nature of your employment (or status as an independent contractor) and the circumstances around the accident. If you or a loved one has recently been injured in a New York City construction accident, we recommend speaking with one of our experienced Bronx construction accident lawyers in a free consultation today to learn more about your legal options.

Fewer Traffic Accidents As A Result Of Vision Zero

With the intense traffic in New York City and the large population traffic accidents are unavoidable. Accidents occur every day in the city but it is truly heartbreaking when injuries and even death are suffered, especially when the accident could have been avoided. Thankfully, city officials have been working hard to improve the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists, and the recent statistics show that it is paying off! NYC pedestrian deaths dropped dramatically and last year the overall traffic fatalities in the city were at the lowest ever recorded!

Vision Zero

These successes in increased safety have been attributed to the efforts made through Vision Zero. The plan or purpose of Vision Zero is to reduce the death and serious injuries on the streets of New York City. The Action Plan was released in 2014 and was comprised of various initiatives that were agreed upon by multiple city agencies and the Mayor’s Office. In 2014 the plan began with 63 separate initiatives and has the plan grew each year more were added. An additional 40 were added in 2015, 22 in 2016 and finally another 26 in 2017. There is now a total of 151 initiatives which anyone can view the status, description and agency in charge of carrying it out online.

Steps To Safety

The Vision Zero action plan as four main ways that it plans to and has started to make streets safer. This is done through public dialogue and education, law enforcement, street design, and legislation. Education has been directed at schools and  afterschool programs and outreach has been focused at senior centers. There are demonstrations on safety which are open to the public. Street teams have been formed to convey safety messages in particularly dangerous areas for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists. The NYPD has also increased their enforcement of certain laws in order to deter people from making choices that are particularly high-risk such as texting while driving. NYC DOT is making improvements to street design in order to increase safety such as installing more pedestrian signals in high priority locations. Legislation is changing to increase safety measures as well. The State gave authorization to NYC in 2014 to increase the speed camera program, continue the red light camera program, and enact a citywide 25 mph speed limit.

Partnering With Success

While the government is doing a great deal to make improvements and reduce the number of fatalities and injuries they are not alone in their efforts. Partnerships have been made with numerous groups such as Cab Riders United and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Volpe Center. The statistics clearly speak for themselves. Hopefully, more cities will follow in New York City’s footsteps and makes strides to decrease the number of accidents and fatalities seen each year.

Surprise Crane Inspections In NYC

Construction is constant in the city that never sleeps. There is always a new project, building, or residence being built which means that accidents occur fairly regularly. It is a sad fact and one that authorities are working are to improve on with safety standards and regulations being put in place to protect workers and innocent bystanders.

Accidents Happen

Nevertheless, New York City has seen many construction accidents. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the private construction industry sector has the highest number of workplace fatalities than any other industry. Some of the most devastating accidents can be those involving cranes. The sheer size of these machines alone can make a small problem become a huge one, so it is important to ensure that that they are in perfect working condition.

Regular Maintenance

In an effort to stay on top of crane maintenance and safety the Department of Buildings made surprise inspections on April 4, to see if construction companies were in compliance with the standards and regulations necessary for cranes to operate. One regulation that was being checked on is that all cranes must be equipped with a wind measuring device. If the winds pick up to more than 30 miles per hour the cab operator can see that in real time and must cease operation of the machine. This regulation was put in place after a crane fell over on a windy day in 2016 and killed a pedestrian.

According to the Department of Buildings, they have cracked down on crane operations and have issued about 8,000 violations last year. That number of violations is a great increase over the 4,000 that were issued five years ago.

Bronx Man Dies In Construction Accident

There is always construction occurring in New York City and the construction industry has no shortage of dangers when it comes to those who work in the industry. For this reason there are many safety regulations and procedures put in place. While many companies adhere to the guidelines put in place to assure their workers are as safe as possible, there are many that do not. This often leads to devastating accidents. Such is the case for one Bronx man who was working at a Queens construction site.

Forklift Accident

On a Tuesday morning in March, a 34-year-old construction worker lost his life in a construction accident involving a forklift. The worker was riding on top of the vehicle that was transporting a bundle of windows when the driver put it in reverse. The forklift ended up in an accident crushing the worker in between the construction vehicle and a wall. The man died at the scene.

Violations And Fear

The construction site where the accident took place has five open Environmental Control Board violations. There had been several stop-work orders issues previously and some that were still in effect. Workers are still allowed to store materials at a site that has an active stop-work order.

Sadly, the deceased worker had expressed concern and fear over working at this site to his brother-in-law because of the poor working conditions and lack of safety. He had stated that he was afraid he was going to die.
